How to read the dates
Each entry gives the Hebrew anniversary and, when known, the Gregorian date of death. Traditional dates are identified as traditional rather than presented as modern documentary dates. For anniversaries that fall on the 30th day of a Hebrew month, communities may follow different conventions; the converter uses one common calendar convention.
Use the date converter to find the Hebrew date for a Gregorian day, then browse the corresponding week. Or start with the selected week and move backward or forward to see whose anniversaries are coming up.
Bring a name into the lesson
Choose one profile and give students a few minutes to notice what the short biography tells them—and what they would still want to find out. A name and date can lead to a question about a person’s work, community, historical moment, or the way memory is kept.
